Grant Eligibility:
Not all homeowners who receive an inspection will qualify for a Hurricane Mitigation Grant. To be eligible for a grant, homeowners must meet all of the following criteria:
1. The home must have received an initial inspection through the program.
2. The home’s insured value must be $700,000 or less (low-income homeowners are exempt from this requirement).
3. The home must have been built before January 1, 2008.
4. The homeowner must provide the contractor’s name and license number for the project.
5. The homeowner must agree to a final inspection after the project is completed.
6. The homeowner must share any insurance discount information resulting from the improvements.
Funding is subject to legislative approval. New applications are not open at this time.
The Florida Legislature has authorized two types of hurricane mitigation grants through the Department of Financial Services (DFS): Matching Grants and Low-Income Grants.
Matching Grants:
The program provides $2 in grant funds for every $1 contributed by the homeowner. Homeowners are reimbursed for two-thirds of the total project costs, up to a maximum state contribution of $10,000.
Examples:
- If a project costs $15,000, the homeowner is reimbursed $10,000 (with a $5,000 match).
- If a project costs $9,000, the homeowner is reimbursed $6,000 (with a $3,000 match).
- If a project costs $20,000, the homeowner is reimbursed the maximum of $10,000 (with a $10,000 match).
Low-Income Grants:
Eligible low-income homeowners can receive up to $10,000 in grant funds without needing to provide a matching amount.
